Landfills are a large driver of the climate crisis due to their high methane leaks. A recent study found methane emissions from landfills were 40% higher than reported. Advanced methods like remote sensing can help detect and fix landfill methane leaks faster. Methane leaks from landfills were, on average, 40% higher than what's been reported to the federal government, according to a study published in the journal Science. Many large landfills capture methane gas so it can be reused as energy, but that infrastructure can leak.

Gas sensor housing Infrared sensor Spectrometer Tracking an Invisible Climate Menace From 360 Miles Above There will soon be a new eye in the sky that’s designed to detect emissions of methane, an invisible yet potent gas that is dangerously heating the world. MethaneSAT will sweep the globe using a high-resolution infrared sensor to detect and track methane leaks from oil and gas sites worldwide. Scientists estimate that human-caused methane emissions are responsible for up to 30 percent of the global warming being experienced today. Figuring out where methane emissions are happening, how big they are and who’s responsible has been a challenge. Methane also seeps from natural sources, like flooded wetlands, but the majority of methane emissions today come from human activity.

North Korea said it placed its first spy satellite in orbit on Tuesday. South Korea's military said North Korea's military reconnaissance satellite was believed to have entered orbit, but it would take time to assess whether it was operating normally. Critics have said the pact weakened South Korea's ability to monitor the North's near the border while North Korea had violated the agreement. South Korea said it was suspending a clause in the agreement and resuming aerial surveillance near the border. North Korea had notified Japan of a satellite launch after two failed attempts to put what it called spy satellites into orbit this year.

An altered video of U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez adds fake audio and visuals to make it appear that the New York congresswoman is urging scientists to study climate change by taking a trip to the Sun to "take samples”. Ocasio-Cortez made no such remark in the original interview that aired on CBS, and the altered version originates from a meme account that describes its offerings as “doctored videos”. A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez also said that the clip circulating online “is fake”. In the altered clip, Ocasio-Cortez sits behind a round glass desk calling for a study into the effects of climate change by focusing on “the main source of all heat in our solar system, the Sun”. Research conducted in part by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue concluded that anti-Semitic tweets in English more than doubled after Mr. Musk’s takeover. Keeping X at the center of public debate is exactly Mr. Musk’s goal, which he describes at times with a messianic zeal. Even worse, the article argued, Mr. Musk’s changes appear to be boosting the engagements of the most contentious users.
